- Tunnel of light
The tunnel of light is an element of the usual
near-death experience . People experience floating upwards peacefully through a long tunnel, at the end of which is a beautiful demulcent light. It remains to be determined whether this phenomenon is universal or not, and whether it is subjective or objective and/or the result of a physiological phenomenon. The tunnel of light is a leitmotif in film and television. As a plot device it is most commonly a passageway to heaven or "the other side" for dead characters, with living characters urging ghostly characters to "cross over" or "go towards the light". Usually it is passage through this tunnel that distinguishes ghosts from angels. "
The Frighteners " makes several direct references to this, including a sequence where the film's protagonist himself traverses such a tunnel, as do "Shades of L.A. " and (more indirectly) "The Ghost Whisperer ". In addition to fiction, the idea also occurs in television documentaries. For example, in the 1998 documentary "Haunted Houses"Sylvia Brown can be seen urging ghosts to "find the light" and go on to "the other side".
