"Tachikaze" spent most of World War II escorting convoys in the southwest Pacific.
On 4 February 1944, returning to Truk Lagoon from Rabaul, "Tachikaze" went hard aground on Kuop Atoll, and remained stranded there despite efforts to free her. During the Allied nihongo|attack on Truk|トラック島空襲|Torakku-tō Kūshū on 17–18 February, "Tachikaze" suffered heavy strafing followed by a torpedo hit in the engine room, which led to the ship sinking by the stern off Kuop (coord|07|03|N|151|56|E |region:FM-TRK |display=title, inline).
On 31 March 1944, "Tachikaze" was removed from the Navy List.
