Yuwen Zhang (simplified Chinese: 张玉文; traditional Chinese: 張玉文) is a Chinese-born American scientist and engineer. He is currently an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO.

Education and Career

Yuwen Zhang received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Connecticut (1998). He is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at University of Missouri (MU). Prior to joining faculty at MU as an Associate Professor in 2003, he worked as a Research Scientist in the University of Connecticut (1999-2000), a Senior Engineer at Thermoflow, Inc. (2000), and an Assistant Professor at the New Mexico State University (2001-2003).

Teaching

Yuwen Zhang has taught Thermodynamics, Engineering Analysis, Gas Dynamics, Heat Transfer, Intermediate Heat Transfer, Multiphase Heat Transfer, and Convective Heat Transfer in Xi'an Jiaotong University, New Mexico State University and University of Missouri, respectively. He has co-authored an undergraduate senior/graduate textbook entitled [http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/bookdescription.cws_home/707571/description?navopenmenu=4 Transport Phenomena in Multiphase Systems] (ISBN 0-12-370610-6, with A. Faghri, by Elsevier), which is the first textbook to truly address transport phenomena in the context of all phase changes among solid, liquid and vapor. His second book entitled Advanced Heat and Mass Transfer (by A. Faghri, Y. Zhang, and J.R. Howell) is scheduled for publication in 2009.

Research

Yuwen Zhang’s research interests are in the areas of thermal/fluid sciences, advanced materials processing, phase change heat transfer and heat pipes, inverse heat transfer problems, ultrafast ultra-intense laser materials processing, heat transfer in energy systems, and micro- and nanoscale heat transfer. During his career at the University of Missouri and New Mexico State University, Dr. Zhang has been the principal investigator or a co-principal investigator on about two million US Dollars of funding from Office of Naval Research, Air Force Research Laboratory, Ball Aerospace Inc., National Science Foundation, U.S. Army [http://www.peostri.army.mil/ Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training, & Instrumentation] , and the University of Missouri Research Board. He also authored over 140 papers, including [http://web.missouri.edu/~zhangyu/pub.htm about 90 journal papers] .

=Professional Services=

Yuwen Zhang is an editorial advisory board member of [http://www.bentham.org/open/totherj/index.htm The Open Thermodynamics Journal] . He has served as proposal reviewer for National Science Foundation (NSF), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), University of Missouri System Research Board, and U.S. Civilian Research & Development Foundation (CRDF). He is also book reviewer for Cambridge University Press, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., and McGraw-Hill Higher Education, as well as peer reviewer for about 30 professional journals. As a Fellow of ASME, he is serving as members of the K-12 Committee on Aerospace Heat Transfer, and K-15 Committee on Transport Phenomena in Manufacturing and Materials Processing, from the ASME Heat Transfer Division. In these capacities, he has served as track chair and session chairs for numerous national and international conferences. As an Associate Fellow of AIAA, he is serving as a Member of Thermophysics Technical Committee.

=Awards=

Dr. Zhang has received many awards including the [http://www.onr.navy.mil/media/article.asp?ID=9 Young Investigator Award] from the Office of Naval Research (2002), the Computational Research Award from Department of Mechanical Engineering in New Mexico State University (2003), and Faculty Fellow Award from the College of Engineering in University of Missouri. He is listed in Marquis [http://www.marquiswhoswho.com/products/SCprodinfo.asp Who’s Who in Science and Engineering] , as well as Who’s Who in America. He is a Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Associate Fellow of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), and member of American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) and [http://www.deps.org Directed Energy Professional Society (DEPS)] .
