An Electronic Data Interchange Personal Identifier, or EDIPI, is a unique number assigned to a record in the United States Department of Defense's Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) database. A record in the DEERS database is a person plus role (e.g. contractor, reservist, civilian, active duty, etc.). The Common Access Card (CAC), which is issued by the Department of Defense through DEERS, should have an EDIPI on the card. A person with two roles in the Department of Defense should have two CAC cards with two different roles. Separating the identities is done so that revocation of one role’s permission can be accomplished simply by commandeering the card without affecting the permissions of the other roles. The EDIPI is a ten-digit number located in the barcode on the front of the card, the barcode on the back of the card, the magnetic stripe on back, and in the integrated circuit chip embedded in the card itself.
