Um Ruman

Um Ruman

Zaynab bint ‘Āmir "Umm Ruman" ( _ar. أم رومان بنت عامر) was a Companion of Muhammad.

Zaynab was raised in "Sarat" in the Arabian Peninsula. She married a young man from her tribe named ‘Abdullah ibn Harith ibn Sakhbarah Azdi; their son was Tufail ibn Abdullah. They then moved to Mecca, where ‘Abdullah became the partner and companion of Abu Bakr (who was already married to Qutaylah bint ‘Abdu l-‘Uzzá) and had a daughter, Asma, and a son, ‘Abdullah.

Soon after, Zaynab was widowed and she and her son were left with no support. Seeing her precarious condition, Abu Bakr married her. They later had a daughter, ‘A'ishah bint Abu Bakr, who married Muhammad.

It is written in the "Tabaqat" of Ibn Sa'd that Umm Ruman accepted Islam in the very early days in Mecca. She swore allegiance at the hand of Muhammad himself and then migrated with the group of immigrants.

One hadith narator named Masruq took narrations from Umm Ruman and wrote that she died in 6 Hijri.
