Plot

The pilot episode began with Maria de Jesus "Marichuy" birth. Her mother, Cecilia Velarde, believing she was dying, entrusted her baby to a priest, named Father Anselmo, who takes her to an orphanage. At the age of 15, Marichuy runs away and begins to live in the streets, doing her best to survive. She spent several years on the street, and unfortunately, one day, she is attacked by a drunk man. However, she cannot seek justice for what happened to her, because aside from the fact that she is of poor status in life, she did not seen the man's face as well because he had attacked her suddenly in the dark. This experience, as well as having terrible recurrent nightmares, leaves her with a deep resentment towards men. Candelaria, a washer woman, offers her a home, and treats her like a daughter. Marichuy performs odd and big jobs to help Candelaria.

One day, Marichuy's mischievous generosity causes trouble when she makes mischiefs on an old man's house (like crashing its windows) and lands her in court, where the judge, who is actually her true biological father, (though neither of them are aware of this), wishes to send her to jail. On the other hand Juan Miguel San Roman, who recently survived a plane crash, which killed his wife Viviana (In reality Viviana is actually alive and had decided to live a life of luxury), believes that Marichuy is just an innocent girl. Marichuy is defended by Juan Miguel San Roman, who is able to see the good side in Marichuy. Marichuy is released under Juan Miguel's custody and he arranges for her to stay in his house with his daughter, Mayita, his mother-in-law, Onelia, and his sister, Rocio. While Marichuy is at his house, they start to fall in love with each other. But then Juan Miguel takes Marichuy to the Velarde household to prevent that love from flourishing.

The only people Marichuy gets along with there are Cecilia (Patricio's wife and Marichuy's biological mother) and a maid, unlike Patricio and Estefania, who claims to be the Velarde's long lost daughter. Estefania has shown great distaste for Marichuy because she too likes Juan Miguel. Estefania and her Aunt, Isabella, soon realizes that Marichuy is the real daughter of the Velardes, and caused Marichuy to go through bad experiences, such as making it look like Marichuy robbed money from the Velardes. Cecilia becomes torn between her "real" daughter Estefania, and Marichuy, with whom she has developed a strong bond.

Eventually, Estefania manages to start a relationship with Juan Miguel, which provokes jealousy in Marichuy. When Patricio has had enough of Marichuy's "lies and behaviour", Marichuy expresses to Juan Miguel that she wants to live with him because she does not want to live with the Velardes anymore. Juan Miguel gives in to her request and takes her with him.

There, Juan Miguel tries to make Marichuy tell him what happens in her nightmares and when she finally told him he finds out that he was the one who assaulted her when she was young and knows she does not really understand what happened. When Juan Miguel starts to avoid her because of his guilt, Marichuy thinks he hates her, but instead Juan Miguel tells her he loves her. Juan Miguel had arranged to marry Estefania, but when he has an accident he had a change of heart and tells Marichuy he will marry her.

Father Anselmo and Eduardo (Juan Miguel's trusted friend) warns Juan Miguel to tell Marichuy that he was the one that attacked her before they are married but fearing her rejection, Juan Miguel lied to Marichuy. They get married regardless and spend a beautiful honeymoon together. However, the next morning Marichuy wakes up from a nightmare and realizes Juan Miguel was her attacker. He pleads for her forgiveness but she does not forgive him and she returns with Candelaria leaving Juan Miguel.

A couple of days after the incident, Juan Miguel visits an institution where he suddenly recognizes the new patient. With great disbelief, he looks at his supposedly dead wife. At that moment, he takes up the responsibility to know what happened to his wife and to help her recover.

Marichuy soon realizes she is pregnant and that she does love Juan Miguel despite what he did to her; she goes to Juan Miguel's house to forgive him and tell him that she is pregnant. Instead of giving Marichuy a positive response, he gives her the news that their marriage is invalid because his wife is not dead. Heartbroken, she returns to Candelaria and goes to speak with Father Anselmo who says he will comply with her request to take her far away to where nobody knows who she is.

Marichuy arrives at the hacienda and meets Leopardo/Omar Contreras, a cold-hearted grumpy man who had a tragic, romantic past with Ivette/Blanca Silva, who, in the later part of the telenovela, was revealed to has a double-personality. Yet as time passed, her kind words and innocence eventually changes his ways and he falls in love with her. Leopardo, despite knowing she is pregnant, proposes to be a father to the baby and a husband to Marichuy. Marichuy cannot make a decision because, despite everything she still loves Juan Miguel.

When Marichuy reads in a newspaper that Juan Miguel's wife was killed by Ivette and that he must need her support, she decides to leave without telling Leopardo and go back to Juan Miguel. After arriving back in Mexico she finds out that Juan Miguel is actually engaged with Blanca (Mayita's governess who suffers from a double personality disorder, in which she becomes Ivette). Marichuy decides not to go back to Juan Miguel, but continue her career as an actress. After a while, Juan Miguel finds out that Marichuy returned. Unexpectedly, Juan Miguel is also reunited with Omar, a long-time friend, who has come in search of a woman he loves named Lirio who is really Marichuy. Juan Miguel does not know Lirio is Marichuy. Soon later Juan Miguel finds out that Lirio is Marichuy, and Omar finds out that Juan Miguel was the father of Marichuy's child and husband, knowing this Juan Miguel and Omar are no longer friends.

Marichuy and Omar get engaged again, although he shows signs of jealousy when Marichuy has any sort of contact with Juan Miguel. Marichuy continues to act in several successful plays when a desperate Estefania decides to end Marichuy's life by putting real bullets in a gun that was used in a prop for Marichuy's show. Marichuy suffers a head injury, which causes her to lose her sight. At this time, Omar realizes he loves Blanca not Marichuy, so he leaves her. Marichuy pretends she regained her sight back only so Omar can be happy without any guilt and so that Juan Miguel can stay away from her.

Not long after, Estefania and her aunt Isabella are suspected in the attempted murder. Estefania denies everything, but her aunt, pressured by the police, admits that Estefania wanted to kill Marichuy. Estefania is arrested, but not after the truth is revealed. Marichuy's father suffers a heart attack when he realizes how cruel he has been to Marichuy when it was actually Estefania's fault.

While Marichuy's father is recovering in the hospital, Marichuy forgives him and they finally develop a father and daughter bond. Before that Omar (Leopardo) realises that he still loves Blanca who tends out to be Yvette and therefore plans on getting married to her. Therefore Marichuy would have to pretend as if she is now able to see to enable Omar marry Blanca without any feeling of guilt.

Juan Miguel then accepts that Marichuy does not love him and decides to leave Mexico, but before he leaves, Marichuy wants to get back with him. When he visits her on his last day he tells her he is leaving and she lets him leave without telling him she loves him. Yet on his trip, Onelia (Juan Miguel's mother-in-law) calls him to tell him that Marichuy is still blind so he returns and finds Marichuy in front of Anselmo's church. He tries to talk to her, provoking her to run and causing her to get hit by a car. She is okay but because of the accident she will never be able to see even if she has surgery. Juan Miguel leaves to study eye surgery in the United States so that when he returns he can perform surgery on Marichuy to regain her sight.

On his trip, Ana Julia, Marichuy's friend begins to have evil intentions because of her jealously towards Marichuy and her sudden attraction to Juan Miguel. She, like Estefania, tries everything to get Marichuy to hate Juan Miguel. When Marichuy develops a tumour in her head and needs surgery, her father does not want to allow Juan Miguel to perform the surgery, even though he is the best surgeon in Mexico. When he finds out that Marichuy is about to die, he comes to his senses and lets Juan Miguel operate on Marichuy. Ana Julia tries to stop Juan Miguel because she wants Marichuy to die, but it does not work. She then plans to drug Juan Miguel and later pretends that she and Juan Miguel had sexual relations.

Ana Julia declares that she is pregnant with his child but the baby's real father is actually Amador. During all of this Marichuy's parents hired Rafael to teach Marichuy how to read and live better while she is blind and they become really good friends. When Juan Miguel finishes Marichuy's operation, Vicente returns and helps Amador to kidnap Rafael and when everyone learns that Rafael is kidnapped, Marichuy says she will not take the bandages off unless Rafael is safe. So Juan Miguel calls Rafael's father and tells him this while Vincente calls the Velardes to tell them about Rafael's kidnapping. Juan Miguel recognizes his voice. Vicente demands a ransom, so Rafael's father gives them the money and gets Rafael back.

Marichuy sees once again, but then rejects Juan Miguel. She then plans to run away with the baby and help others in the world that need her along with another man who is also in love with Marichuy. Juan Miguel tries to tell her that they can be together, but Marichuy does not listen. Days pass, until Amador admits that Ana Julia is really pregnant with his child. Ana Julia and Vicente come to stop Amador from telling the truth, but they are too late. Ana Julia loses her temper and tries to take the gun from Amador. This leads to the death of Vicente, who is shot by accident. Marichuy calls Juan Miguel to help her. So Juan Miguel comes and tells everyone that Vicente can not live. Marichuy thanks Juan Miguel for all the things that he had done. The two are finally together again. Amador is put in jail. Rafeal also decided to do the operation, and thanks to Juan Miguel he can see for the first time.

While Juan Miguel and Marichuy spend a day together, Marichuy admits that she wants to be Juan Miguel's wife again. He agrees and so they plan to marry. On the day of their wedding, Marichuy enters the church to thank the lord. Marichuy receives a letter from Juan Miguel who seems to have a surprise for her. But Marichuy discovers that it was Ana Julia, who then knocks her out. Ana Julia leaves a letter saying that if Juan Miguel's love is not for her, then it will not be for Marichuy. Ana Julia takes Marichuy to a trailer(the same one that Amador held Rafael hostage). Ana Julia then lights it on fire to kill herself, her unborn baby, and Marichuy. Ana Julia also suddenly goes into labour. Despite Ana Julia telling her to leave her, Marichuy gets her and herself out, then delivers Ana Julia's daughter. Ana Julia dies due to too much smoke in her lungs, but before she does she apologizes to Marichuy for all the bad things she did to her. Juan Miguel thinks Marichury is dead when he sees the flames, but then Marichuy comes from the back of the building holding Anna Julia's baby. After that, they both decide to give the baby to Purita and Adrian. Marichuy and Juan Miguel are finally married and they spend their honeymoon with Mayita and Juanito. The show ends with the new family all dressed in white, playing soccer at the beach, together, happy... finally a big family. This telenovela is currently showing on TV Africa in Ghana, Iran on Pmc Family, Italy on Lady Channel (Sky),and in NTV in Kenya.
