Isaac N. Young

Isaac N. Young

Isaac Newton Young was a Shaker from New Lebanon, New York. He kept detailed records of his life with the Shakers, and more than four thousand pages are known to have survived. They constitute a major historical document. [Wergland]

His "A Short Abridgement of the Rules of Music", published in 1843, was the first historically notable collection of Shaker music to be published. [Rycenga, Jennifer, Denise A. Seachrist and Elaine Keillor, "Snapshot: Three Views of Music and Religion", pgs. 129 - 139, in the "Garland Encyclopedia of World Music"]
