"Sedum rubritinctum", is a "cactus" which originates from a small island within the French Polynesian Islands, situated near Australia in the continent of Oceania. It is an unusual cactus in that its leaves and stem do not bear spikes or hairs, rendering it useless as a cactus. Many centuries ago, the inhabitants of French Polynesia considered the plant to be a medium between them and the gods. They ground up the stems to smoke, in order to induce hallucinogenic trances, and the men drank the inside of the leaves with a mixture of wild boar's blood, since they believed it would give them strength and agility during hunts and battles.

In the late 19th century, this plant was brought over to Europe after explorers discovered its effects as a drug. Sedum Rubritinctum was a common drug used by back-street surgeons and abortionists, because it would send the patient into a deep trance, minimising their pain. It also circuited the underground markets and scenes, under the pseudonym "Aphrodite", as it was initially used by men visiting brothels. This plant has been referenced in a few history texts, such as Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft, owing to the superstition that it was used by witches during the Victorian era. However, there are not many sources that offer a comprehensive view on this period of witchcraft, as it was not a witchcraft was not a subject recorded much in that period. During the spring, this plant produces bright yellow flowers, which can be used as a herb to add spice to dishes.

Maintenance

#The plant must be fed at the same time every day with a "special" cactus feed in order to allow the cactus to reach its maximum potential. WARNING! This feed must not be consumed as it induces vomiting and dizziness. The feed can be purchased at specialist cacti stores.
#It must be kept in bright daylight.
#It must be buried on smooth ground, preferably surrounded by coloured gravel.
