- Bretonne
Bretonne is the feminine version of
Breton .For example a man born in
Brittany is referred to as beingBreton whereas a woman born inBrittany is referred to as Bretonne. This not only applies to men and women. Like in many
languages such as French most objects are classified into a sex ofmasculine orfeminine . A house for example is a feminine object in theBreton Language and in French too. So when a French person writes about aBrittany house they will say: La maison Bretonne (Maison is French for House. It is feminine therefore Bretonne). A women born inBrittany would say: "Je suis Bretonne" and a man born in Brittany would say: "Je suis Breton". Similar to someone born inScotland saying: I am Scottish. The native language in
Brittany is called Bretonne which is a Celtic language sharing many similarities with Welsh and Cornish. The Bretonne language has been spoken for over 1500 years and is today still spoken everyday by some 270,000 people. The language nearly died out because it was illegal to teach it in schools until the 1950s. Today in Brittany there are Bilingual schools teaching both French and Bretonne.References
