The Central North Correctional Centre is a maximum security prison located in Penetanguishene, Ontario, Canada. From 2001 to 2006, it was the first and only privately run correctional facility in Canada.

History

The Central North Correctional Centre was commissioned in November 2001 to replace the outdated Barrie Jail, Parry Sound Jail, and Guelph Correctional Centre. It opened as the first privately operated correctional facility in Canada. An American company "Management and Training Corporation" from Centerville, Utah was contracted by the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services to operate the facility for five years. Following the completion of the five year term, the contract between the Ontario Government and M.T.C. was not renewed. The operation of the facility was turned over to the government on November 10, 2006.cite press release |title=Central North Correctional Centre Transferring To Public Sector Operation |publisher=Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services |date=April 27 2006 |url=http://ogov.newswire.ca/ontario/GPOE/2006/04/27/c1439.html?lmatch=&lang=_e.html |accessdate=2008-06-07] cite news |title=Ontario to take back control of private super-jail |url=http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2006/11/10/private-jail.html |publisher=CBC News |date=November 10 2006 |accessdate=2008-06-07]
