- Prabhakaran Paleri
Prabhakaran Paleri was the 16th director general of
Indian Coast Guard before retiring from service in July 2006.Education
Prabhakaran Palleri completed his bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from
NIT Calicut and obtained Master's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Madras in 1978.He is also a graduate from the National Defence University, Washington, with master's degree in National Security Strategy and obtained doctorate from the University of Madras for thesis, ‘Changing concept of National Security and a maritime model for India'.
Navy
Paleri joined the Indian Navy in 1969 in the executive branch after graduating from erstwhile REC Calicut. He has served in the custom marine organisation on deputation before joining the Coast Guard in 1981.
He has been with the maritime force since its formative years, holding the assignments of Deputy-Director General; Regional Commander, Coast Guard Region (West); and Commander, Coast Guard District (Kerala & Lakshadweep) and (West Bengal), besides commanding the first advanced offshore patrol vessel ICGS Samar and the training ship ICGS Varuna.He is the first recipient of the Tatrakshak Medal.
He has also been trained in fisheries technology, narcotics law enforcement and environmental science.In 2003 he authored a book, `Role of the Coast Guard in Maritime Security of India.'
