- Xiaoliang Sunney Xie
Xiaoliang Sunney Xie (born 1962 in
Beijing , China) is abiochemist . He is Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology atHarvard University . Xie is considered as a founding father of single-moleculeenzymology . He has made major contributions toCARS microscopy (based on coherent anti-stokes raman scattering). Peking University , followed by his Ph.D. in 1990 from the University of California at San Diego. He conducted postdoctoral research at theUniversity of Chicago and in 1992 joinedPacific Northwest National Laboratory , where he later became a Chief Scientist. In 1999, he was appointed Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard University. [ [http://www.lambmedal.org/2007/2007-xie.html Biography of Xie from the Website of the Willis E. Lamb Award (displayed June 4, 2008)] ]Xie was among the first to conduct fluorescence studies of single molecules at room temperature in the early 1990s. His group has since contributed to the emergence of the field of single-molecule science and its application to biology. In particular, their work has been focusing on single-molecule enzymology, protein conformational dynamics, and single-molecule dynamics in living cells.
