As the
autonym ous variety, "B. sessilis" var. "sessilis" emcompasses the type material of the species; thus collections of this variety date back to the 1791 visit ofArchibald Menzies toKing George Sound .cite journal | first = Alex | last = George | year = 1996 | title = New taxa and a new infrageneric classification in "Dryandra" R.Br. (Proteaceae: Grevilleoideae) | journal = Nuytsia | volume = 10 | issue = 3 | pages = 313–408] However the autonym was not needed until 1996, whenAlex George published the other three varieties. As this taxon was then placed within the genus "Dryandra ", this varieties name was then "Dryandra sessilis" var. "sessilis". It was transferred to its current name in 2007, whenAustin Mast andKevin Thiele transferred "Dryandra" into "Banksia ".cite journal | author = Mast, Austin R. and Kevin Thiele | year = 2007 | title = The transfer of Dryandra R.Br. to Banksia L.f. (Proteaceae) | journal = Australian Systematic Botany | volume = 20 | pages = 63–71 | doi = 10.1071/SB06016]Distribution and habitat
