Korean beef protest

Korean beef protest

The Korean beef Protest, also known as Candle Protest(촛불시위 or 촛불문화제) in Korea, began with demonstrations on March 2, 2008. The subsequent event began when president Lee Myung Bak announced that he would import Ametican beef over the age of 30 months. Concern about public health rose, and facts, as well as rumours, about the seriousness of Mad Cow disease began circulating.

Background

The initial protest began because president Lee announced that American beef over the age of 30 months, which had been banned prior to his statement, would be allowed entry into Korea's beef market. Public health concerns began to rise.
