Justice S. R. Nayak (1st January 1945-) was elevated as a Judge of High Court of Karnataka state, India on 25th February, 1994 and subsequently he was sworn in as Judge of High Court of Andhra Pradesh state, India on 21st March, 1994. He was re-transferred to Karnataka High Court and he was sworn in as a Judge of Karnataka High Court on 2nd January, 2003. He was the acting Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court from 20th October, 2004 to 19th November, 2004.

Mr. Nayak assumed charge of the office of the Hon’ble the Chief Justice of High Court of Chhattisgarh state, India at Bilaspur on 17th Nov,2005. He retired on January 1, 2007.

Early life and education

The Honorable Justice Subray Rama Nayak a Nadavara was born on January 1st, 1945 in the Naadumaskeri village of Kumta taluk of Uttara Kannada district in an agriculturists and freedom fighters' family. His mother Nagamma Rama Nayak and father Rama Ranga Nayak were imprisoned by the British Government for having participated in Quit India Movement, a part of freedom struggle of India.

He completed his primary education from his native place and high School education from Janata Vidyalaya, Dandeli. He did his B.Sc. degree from [http://yuvarajacollege.org/ Yuvaraja College, a University College of Mysore University] and LL.B., and LL.M., from Bangalore University.

Career

Justice Nayak mainly practiced in the High Court of Karnataka till his elevation to the Bench on 25th February, 1994 and subsequently he was sworn in as Judge of High Court of Andhra Pradesh state, India on 21st March, 1994. He was re-transferred to Karnataka High Court and he was sworn in as a Judge of Karnataka High Court on 2nd January, 2003. He was the acting Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court from 20th October, 2004 to 19th November, 2004.

Mr. Nayak assumed charge of the office of the Hon’ble the Chief Justice of High Court of Chhattisgarh state, India at Bilaspur on 17th Nov,2005. He retired from Chhattisgarh state High court on January 1, 2007. Justice Subray R. Nayak after retirement, is serving as the Chairperson of the newly formed Karnataka State Human Rights Commission. Kannada University at Hampi conferred on him the prestigious "NAADOJA" award,equivalent to honorary doctorate in literature on January 2008.Fact|date=July 2008

Nayak was a part-time lecturer of Law from 1975 till he was elevated to the Bench. He taught at B.M.S. Collage of Law, Basavanagudi, Bangalore and S.L.S.R.C. Havanur College of Law, Bangalore. Nayak is an alumni of Janata Vidyalaya, Dandeli, Bangalore University and Yuvaraja College of Mysore University.

Justice Subray Nayak has married Shalini V. Kavari from Devarbhavi village Kumta and they have two children. Justice Nayak, and his family are deeply spiritual and they are blessed by the Great seer Sri Guru SADANANDA MAHARAJ.
