- Emanuel Margoliash
Emanuel Margoliash (died
April 10 ,2008 , age 88) was a biochemist who spent much of his career studying the proteincytochrome c . He is best known for his work onmolecular evolution ; with Walter Fitch, he devisedFitch-Margoliash method for constructing evolutionary trees based onprotein sequences .He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the
American Academy of Arts and Sciences .Margoliash earned an M.D. from the
American University of Beirut . He served as anIsraeli Army medical officer during the1948 Arab-Israeli War , and subsequently held research positions at theHebrew University of Jerusalem -Hadassah Medical School , theNobel Institute Department of Biochemistry , theUniversity of Utah College of Medicine , theMcGill-Montreal General Hospital Research Institute , theUniversity of Illinois at Chicago andAbbott Laboratories . From 1971 until his retirement in 1990, he was a professor atNorthwestern University , where he became chair of the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Cell Biology.References
