Momentum Mississippi is a statewide, public, private partnership dedicated to the development of economic and employment opportunities in Mississippi. It was created in 2004 by Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour to implement recommendations of the Blueprint Mississippi Study which was initiated by the Mississippi Economic Council. Its major goals are to increase per capita income and employment while bringing new investments, jobs, and quality education to Mississippi. It strives to develop strategies and legislation that promote a positive business climate in the state.
Its early successes included support for important legislation designed to enhance existing tax credits administered by the Mississippi Development Authority. This effort includes investment incentives not only for manufacturing sector jobs, but also high-tech industries and other existing Mississippi businesses through issuance of bonds.
Led by top level business CEOs and members of the education community, Momentum Mississippi's focus centers around the following High Priority Goals:
Economic Oriented
- Establish and sustain an economic development vision and strategic plan for Mississippi
- Strengthen Mississippi’s business image
- Enhance competitiveness of legal environment
- Diversify and improve Mississippi’s economic base
- Increase support for existing firms
- Strengthen physical infrastructure
- Help attract tourism opportunities and expand film-making in Mississippi
- Increase participation in adult lifelong learning, worker training and professional development activities
Education Oriented (P12)
- Better prepare children for school
- Maximize the number of people graduating from high school
- Train, mentor and retain better teachers
