Construction work being done on the Chateau Restaurant at Twelve Corners, in the heart of Brighton, had ended for the night. The workmen had lit flares and were going home when the flares set off an explosion in an underground natural gas vault that held regulators. The explosion sent a manhole cover flying into the air, and as it fell, it struck the regulator mechanism, forcing it into the "on" position.
