Vathima (also spelt Vadhima) are a subsect of
Iyers from theIndian state ofTamil Nadu . Being Iyers, they are all Pancha Dravida Brahmins of theSmartha sect who follow theAdvaita philosophy propunded byAdi Shankaracharya [http://www.kamat.com/kalranga/people/brahmins/list.htm "Vathimas" in the list of Brahmin communities] ] .Etymology and Origin
The word "Vathima" or "Vadhima" is believed to have been a corrupt form of Madhyama which means "central part". Based on this etymological relationship, Vathimas are believed to have descended from the Brahmins who migrated from Central India (Madhya Bharat).
Geographical Distribution
Vathimas mainly originate from the 18 villages of
Sengalipuram , Mudikondan, Semangudi, Palur,Tippirajapuram , Konerirajapuram, Puliyur, Anathandavapuram,Mozhaiyur ,Arasavanangadu [ [http://www.avgadu.com Arasavanangadu] ] , Koonthalur, Thethiyur, Vishnupuram, Serukalathur, Marathurai, Manthai nearKumbakonam in Tamil Nadu. Thousands of them migrated to Chennai and USA.Famous Vathimas
