Vathima

Vathima (also spelt Vadhima) are a subsect of Iyers from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Being Iyers, they are all Pancha Dravida Brahmins of the Smartha sect who follow the Advaita philosophy propunded by Adi Shankaracharya [http://www.kamat.com/kalranga/people/brahmins/list.htm "Vathimas" in the list of Brahmin communities] ] .

Etymology and Origin

The word "Vathima" or "Vadhima" is believed to have been a corrupt form of Madhyama which means "central part". Based on this etymological relationship, Vathimas are believed to have descended from the Brahmins who migrated from Central India (Madhya Bharat).

Geographical Distribution

Vathimas mainly originate from the 18 villages of Sengalipuram, Mudikondan, Semangudi, Palur, Tippirajapuram, Konerirajapuram, Puliyur, Anathandavapuram, Mozhaiyur,Arasavanangadu [ [http://www.avgadu.com Arasavanangadu] ] , Koonthalur, Thethiyur, Vishnupuram, Serukalathur, Marathurai, Manthai near Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu. Thousands of them migrated to Chennai and USA.

Famous Vathimas

* Sir A. Seshayya Sastri (1828-1903), Lawyer and administrator. Dewan of Travancore from 1872 to 1877 and Dewan of Pudukkottai from 1878 to 1894.
