Ceelwaaq

Ceelwaaq

Ceelwaaq ( _so. "Ceel Waaq") is a town in the Gedo region of Somalia. It is the seat of one of the Gedo region's seven districts. Garsaal, Buusaar and Dhamase are other centers of the Ceelwaaq district. The province is rich in livestock, camels, cows, sheeps and goats. The main activity of the local popolation is stock rearing (sheep farming), and small business and trade.

The district of El Wak is bordered by the Bardera and Garbahaarreey districts to the east, and the North Eastern Province to the west.

In the [Somali language] , the word Ceel means well and (Waaq) means, in Oromo, God.So that Ceelwaaq means The Well of God. Many cities and towns in Somalia have that word(Ceel)as initial part of their names, thus indicating the importance of water wells for mostly pastoral populations of Somalia.

As with the rest of the Gedo region and other regions in Somalia, Ceelwaq has been struck by the Somali Civil War, which first began in the early 1990's.
