His evident talent and aggressive riding style as a junior and young senior caused much excitement in the British cycling press at the time. He won the Milk Race with an audacious long-range attack on the Tumble - a mountain road in South Wales. He turned professional in 1985 and in his rookie year came 4th in the prestigious Dutch one-day classic, the Amstel Gold Race. Despite the early promise his wins were few and far between due to a series of injuries (especially tendonitis) prior to his retirement in 1991.Palmarès
