Thomas West, 9th Baron De La Warr

Thomas West, 9th Baron De La Warr

Thomas West, 9th Baron De La Warr and 6th Baron West (c. 1475 – 1554) succeeded to his titles at the age of 50. He was the son of Thomas West, 8th Baron De La Warr and Lady Elizabeth Mortimer.

He was made Knight of the Garter in 1549 after having fought in France. Having no children, he settled his estates on his nephew William for his lifetime, but was the victim of an attempted poisoning, for which William was attainted. When Thomas died, his titles passed into abeyance between the daughters of his half-brother, Sir Owen West.

The Barony De La Warr (but not West) was eventually re-created in the person of William, the erstwhile poisoner, and the new creation was permitted the original precedence. Cokayne seems to regard the ancient Barony of De La Warr as "de facto" extinguished or merged. He entertains no doubts about the status of the Barony of West, calling it clearly in abeyance.
