Alpha Aquarii (Alpha Aqr / α Aquarii / α Aqr), which also has the traditional name Sadalmelik, is the second-brightest star in the constellation Aquarius. Accessed on line October 3, 2008.] It is a G-type supergiant (yellow supergiant) star in the constellation of Aquarius, with an apparent visual magnitude of approximately 2.950, approximately 800 light-years from the Earth. It has a diameter approximately 60 times that of the Sun, and a luminosity which is 3,000 times greater than the Sun's.

The name "Sadalmelik" derives from an Arabic expression سعد الملك "sa^cd al-malik/mulk" meaning "Luck of the king/kinghood". The name "Rucbah" has also been applied to this star; it shares this name with Delta Cassiopeiae.pp. 51, 148, [http://books.google.com/books?id=5xQuAAAAIAAJ "Star-names and Their Meanings"] , Richard Hinckley Allen, New York: G. E. Stechert, 1899.] It is only one of two stars with ancient proper names to lie within a degree of the celestial equator. The origin of the Arabic name is quite lost to history.
