Sunworld International Airways was a small airline that operated in the western USA from 1983 until liquidated in 1988. Towards the end of operations it was known as Sunworld Airlines.

Company history

Sunworld International Airways (not to be confused with Sunworld International Airlines) was founded by ex-managers of Bonanza Air Lines as Jetwest International in 1981, but it began operations on May 27, 1983 under the Sunworld name and used Douglas DC-9 aircraft.

Sunworld was originally based at Las Vegas, Nevada but shortly after being founded moved its base to Reno, Nevada. Some cities served from Reno and Las Vegas were:

*Spokane, Washington
*San Jose, California
*Tucson, Arizona
*Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
*Oakland, California

In 1985 the Boeing 737-300 was received and put into service. Also, three Boeing 727-200s were operated.

In January 1988 all flights were cancelled due to financial reasons and the only route kept open was Las Vegas-Omaha plus some charter work. By April Sunworld had to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and with debts of over US$15 million operations could not be sustained and on November 7, 1988 the airline was liquidated.
