Porphiryj Uspenski

Porphiryj Uspenski (1804-1885), archbishop of Kiev of the Russian Orthodox Church, and archeologist. His real name was Constantin Alexandrowich Uspenski ( _ru. Константин Александрович Успенский).

Life

In 1829 he finished Saint-Petersburg Theological Academy ( _ru. Санкт-Петербургская духовная академия), became monk, and received name Porphiryj.

He was interested in a field of Early Christian History.

In 1834 he became archimandrite. In 1842 he organised and participated in the first Russian mission in Jerusalem. In 1845 he travelled to the Athos and Sinai, and he saw the Codex Sinaiticus (one year after Tischendorf's first visit). After a visit in the monastery of Mar Saba he took the codex, which was later named after him — Uspenski Gospels, and he brought it together with others manuscripts to Russia [Uspenski brought to Russia manuscripts from Mount Athos (f.e. Codex Coislinianus), Sinai Peninsula (f.e. Uncial 087), and Mar Saba. ] . In 1869 he received a doctor degree of Greek Philosophy.
