"Secrets" is a children's book by Jacqueline Wilson, published in 2002 by Corgi (an imprint of Random House).
It is about two girls, India and Treasure. Treasure begins the story with the tale of how she got her scar on her forehead, when her mum's boyfriend Terry hit her with his belt after discovering that Treasure had drawn numerous inventions to "destroy" him. Treasure then went to live with her nan, Rita. Rita is very young and hip. She has a line dancing class and a head full of blonde hair. Treasure lives with her nan on the Latimer Estate, a rough place full of crime.
India, on the other hand, is rich. She is very rich due to her mum's clothing line. But India is very unhappy, she has no friends. India is overweight and is not very pretty either. She has a head full of red hair, but is not fiery or fiesty, but very shy and secretive. She admires Anne Frank, and has read her wondeful diary time and time again.
The two girls meet when India's au pair Wanda forgets to pick her up from school after falling asleep. She decides to walk home, through the Latimer Estate. India and Treasure connect immediately and India goes to Treasure's for tea.
The girls strike up and unlikely friendship. But when Treasure's mum and Terry come to take her home, away from her lovely life on the Latimer Estate, Treasure runs away to India's house. India hides her in the attic, unknown to her parents and her au pair, and her cleaning lady. One thing Treasure has forgotten, though, is her asthma inhaler, which is in her bag, which she dropped when running away from her mum and Terry. India compares Treasure to Anne Frank and Treasure reads Anne's diary up in the attic and falls in love with the book, as India had already done. Treasure's parents are on the news afterwards. Rita can only be seen by a strand of her long blonde hair in the corner. After Treasure stays nearly a week in the attic, Rita contacts India at her school, and Rita comes to get Treasure. Treasure ends up staying with Rita, on the Latimer Estate, and India finally has a friend. India's mum is interested by Treasure's looks when she sees her wearing her designer clothes, and hires her as a model for her clothing line. India gets to go with Treasure to a photo shoot in Amsterdam, and they get to see Anne Frank's secret annexe. They read her red and white checked diary, and although they can't read Dutch, they don't need to, they know the story off by heart.
