He was also the only National Guard officer to command an active duty division in World War II. [ [http://www.43d-research.com/43d_Pacific_History.html 43d Infantry Division] ]

MG Wing was educated at Norwich University, the Military College of Vermont, and in 1985 was presented with the Distinguished Alumnus Award for his military service [http://www.norwich.edu/alumni/alumniawards.html] . General Wing was a well known Republican political figure in Vermont and would likely have been elected governor in 1946 if a heart attack hadn’t cut his life short.
