Lights (cigarette type)

Lights are cigarettes with a low level of nicotine and have a lighter flavor and expression of nicotine as opposed to full flavored cigarettes which have a stronger flavor and expression. Virtually every major brand of cigarette such as Marlboro, Camel, Doral, Basic, and Winston have a "lights" version.

The lighter flavor of these cigarettes is often achieved through the addition of perforations to the filter portion of the cigarette. While smoke is drawn from the burning tobacco, clean air enters the filter through the perforations, mixing with the tobacco smoke. This lessens the proportion of smoke to air inhaled.

In ultra light cigarettes, the perforations in the filter section are larger, resulting in an even smaller smoke to air ratio.
