Patrick Earl Hammie

Patrick Earl Hammie

Patrick Earl Hammie (born 1981, New Haven, Connecticut) is a contemporary American painter whose work blends traditional and contemporary modes of figurative representation. [Wetmore, Kevin "Student Artists Hone Skills at The Benton," "The Daily Campus" Feb 19 2007]

Hammie's large scale paintings explore the tension between power and vulnerability as he re-imagines the modern male. He situates himself in the discourse of contemporary figure painting that questions and creates visual alternatives to traditional and historical examples of masculinity. [Kitwana, Bakari, "The Hip-Hop Generation: Young Blacks and the Crisis in African American Culture." (New York: Basic Civitas Books, 2002): 12.] Coming of age in a generation that is post-Civil Rights and post-Second Wave Feminism, his work draws upon his life history as a son, a male, and an African American struggling to synthesize past adversity and acclimatize to present realities.
