John Wheatley, Lord Wheatley

John Francis Wheatley was appointed a Senator of the College of Justice in January 2000. He is a graduate of Edinburgh University. He became an advocate in 1966. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1993.

From 1970 until 1974, Lord Wheatley was Standing Junior Counsel to the Scottish Development Department. He served as an Advocate Depute from 1974 until 1978. He sat as a Sheriff at Dunfermline from 1979 to 1980, and at Perth until 1998, when he was appointed Sheriff Principal of Tayside, Central and Fife. From 1998 until his appointment as a Judge, Lord Wheatley was Chairman of the Sheriff Court Rules Council.

He also served on the Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee, and was on the Parole Board from 2000 to 2003. He served on the Judges’ Council from 2001 to 2005, and was Chairman of the Judicial Studies Committee from 2002 to 2006. He is currently a member of the Judicial Appointments Board.

Lord Wheatley has written on road traffic law.

Lord Wheatley’s father, Baron Wheatley of Shettleston, served as a Judge from 1954 to 1985 and was Lord Justice-Clerk from 1972 to 1985.
