Sallie Wilson

Sallie Wilson

Sallie Wilson (1932-2008) was a noted ballerina who appeared mostly with American Ballet Theatre. She was associated with several ballets created by Anthony Tudor. In 1966, she achieved a triumph as Hagar in ABT's revival of Tudor's ballet "Pillar of Fire", set to the music of Arnold Schoenberg's "Transfigured Night". The ballet, contrary to expectation, is "not" based on the Biblical story of Hagar, but on the poem that inspired the Schoenberg piece (although rather loosely). Ms. Wilson made, as far as is known, only one television and film appearance, respectively. She can be seen as Mrs. Stahlbaum, the mother of Clara (Gelsey Kirkland), in Mikhail Baryshnikov's now-classic television version of Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker". She also appeared in the 1973 PBS documentary "American Ballet Theatre: A Close-Up in Time".

Sallie Wilson was born in Fort Worth, Texas and died of cancer in Manhattan, on April 27, 2008.
