John Scott Award

John Scott Award

The John Scott Award (first given 1822 in Philadelphia) is an award given to inventors whom are particularly deserving because their invention(s) contributed to the "comfort, welfare, and happiness" of humankind. The druggist John Scott of Edinburgh organized a four thousand dollar fund which, after his death (1815) was administered bya merchant until the first award, a copper medal and "an amount not to exceed twenty dollars", was given (1822). Several hundred recipientshave since been selected by the City Council of Philadelphia, which decide from the annual list of nominees made by the Franklin Institute.Most awards have been given for inventions in science and medicine. Famousrecipients include

Jonas Salk,
Irving Langmuir,
Glenn Seaborg,
Frederick G. Banting,
Guglielmo Marconi,
John Bardeen, Dr. Kary B. Mullis and Professor Richard E. Smalley.
