The DEEDS Project at the University of Toronto

The DEEDS Project has been in operation since May 1992 at the University of Toronto. The Project consists of two distinct operations. The research projects of which there are currently three, (DEEDS Medieval English Charters, Ethiopia Arts and Culture, and Central and Inner Asia Studies) and the Training Courses. The common components of the two operations are the Project staff and the Project's Information Technology infrastructure.

The original name of the Project is an acronym for the Documents of Early England Data Set, which was the original research project of Michael Gervers, Professor of History, who is now the director of the DEEDS Project. The original research project was started in 1975. This project continues to operate as part of the now much enlarged DEEDS Project.

Research Projects

As of May 2008, the DEEDS Project has three Research Projects:
* DEEDS Medieval English Charters
* Ethiopia Arts and Culture. A Treasury of Ethiopian Images.
* Central and Inner Asia Studies

DEEDS Medieval English Charters

The DEEDS Medieval English Charters consists of a database of information culled from medieval property exchange documents, which are in Latin. Initially 1,500 private charters of the Great Cartulary of the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem were converted to electronic format and stored in a database system. Computer-based analysis was conducted on the documents to create a research database containing personal names, relationships, occupations, properties, places and dates culled from the original documents. As was the common practice at the time, the documents are not dated. Dating of the documents is accomplished by comparison of common phrases in the documents. The DEEDS corpus has now been expanded to more than 9,500 property exchange documents from twelfth and thirteenth century England and Wales.

Ethiopia Arts and Culture

The Ethiopia Arts and Culture Research Project is a Database for the Recording of Ethiopian Art, Architecture and Culture. A photographic collection of Ethiopian art and culture has been made accessible to the academic community via the World Wide Web. Each image is identified by a reference code and explanatory captions. The images are also indexed by a wide range of criteria including date, type of object, media, type of social milieu, location, subject matter, donor, and keywords. Users can search for specific images or groups of images either by selecting words from screen indexes of terms, or by typing keywords into a search-engine. Multiple-criteria searches may be carried out and selected images can be viewed in pairs for the sake of comparison. Currently there are over 11,000 images with more being added regularly. Future plans include adding bibliographical references, and enabling visitors to the site to enter their comments for any image, in Ethiopian languages or in English.

Training Courses

Training courses at the DEEDS Project are suspended due to restructuring of Training Course delivery.

The Training Courses at the DEEDS Project were developed to support the research projects of the DEEDS Project. The original DEEDS Medieval English Charters research project required the use of an enterprise database. Database Administrator and Database Developer personnel were also required to operate the database. Funding of the research projects was made possible by running Training Courses which utilized the project's database and the associated personnel. The Training Courses were successful in attracting students and therefore the research projects were able to be fully funded.

In June, 2008 the University of Toronto withdrew support for the DEEDS Project. As all the teaching staff of the DEEDS Project were employees of the University, this resulted in the discontinuation of the Training Courses at the DEEDS Project. It is intended that the Training Courses will be resumed at a to be determined date, so that the Research projects of the DEEDS Project can continue to be fully funded.

Oracle Training

Since May 1992, initially in Academic Alliance with Oracle Corporation and now as a partner with Oracle Corporation in the Workforce Development Program, we have been offering a 25 week full-time training course. Initially this course prepared professional level students for careers as Database Developers. The course itself has been continually updated to reflect changes in Oracle Certification and as new versions of the Oracle Database Server have been released. The course offers the option of preparing for a position as a Database Developer or of preparing for a position as a Database Administrator. Training is provided to match the current Oracle Certified Associate ( [http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=39 OCA] ) DBA and Developer certifications.

Java Training

In addition to Oracle training we provide training in Java. Java training is provided as a component of our 25 week full time course. Training in Java programming, and server-side programming with Java Enterprise Edition is provided. As an alternative to the Database Administration component of our 25 week full time course students can elect for training in Enterprise JavaBeans. Alternatively a 12 week full time course is available which includes Java, Java Enterprise Edition and Enterprise JavaBeans programming.

oftware Testing

A new initiative in 2008 is the addition of training in Software Testing. This full time training course is 6 weeks long. Students are prepared for the Certified Tester, Foundation Level (CTFL) offered by the International Software Testing Qualification Board ISTQB certification. The certification exam is provided on the last day of the course. Students learn all of the software testing topics required to complete Certified Tester Foundation Level Exam, Business Data Modeling, Database programming using SQL (Structured Query Language), Internet programming (HTML, CSS and XML), UNIX (Solaris) operating system fundamentals and Linux (RedHat) operating system fundamentals during this course.
