Telfer Wall

Telfer Wall

The Telfer Wall was a rubble-built extension to the Flodden Wall, built around the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, between 1628 and 1636 and strengthened in 1650 and 1715. [ [www.scran.ac.uk reference 000-000-127-708-C] ] It was named after its mason, John Taillefer. The wall was built to enclose an extra 10 acres of land purchased by the city, [ [http://www.edinburgh-tattoo.co.uk/edinburgh/oldtown02.html A Guided Walk From The Official Tattoo Web Site] ] running south along the Vennel, from the Flodden Tower - the last remaining bastion of the town walls. Building within convert|15|ft|m of the wall used to be forbidden, [ [www.scran.ac.uk reference 000-000-127-708-C] ] but part of George Heriot's School can be seen close to the inside of the north-south fragment of the wall. The Telfer wall used to close off the end of Forrest Road, [ [www.scran.ac.uk reference 000-000-127-451-C] ] but currently that section only closes off the south end of the Greyfriars Kirkyard.
