Plot summary

King Zachary has finally admitted his feeling for Karigan but is forced into a political marriage and relationship with Karigan is impossible; leaving both Karigan and Zachary touchy and unhappy. Stevic G'ladheon, Karigan's father, also does not seem to understand that Karigan's duty to the Green Riders goes beyond personal choice and tries to marry Karigan off.A impoverished noble, Lord Amberhill, masquerades as the Raven Mask while he attempts to restore his clan's fortune. Karigan attempts to stop Amberhill from stealing an ancient manuscript from a museum, but fails in her formal attire. Amberhill also associates with Lady Estora.

Soon Karigan is sent on several messenger errands as Captain Mapstone attempts to separate her from King Zachary. She delivers a message to the Golden Guardian in Selium. Next, she pays a visit to Damian Frost to request more messenger horses. Lastly, she delivers a decoy message to her old school nemesis, now lord-governor Timas Mirwell, in an attempt to contact Rider Beryl Spencer.

Alton D'yer continues to try to fix the breach in wall, but it will not let him back in. As the story progresses the wall's guardians become more and more confused. Help arrives in the form of Rider Dale Littlepage. She is able to pass through the wall. Merdigen goes on a journey and various mages arrive throughout the story.

The Second Empire, descendants of Mornhaven the Black, are still trying to destroy the D'Yer wall and bring about the destruction of Sacordia. The leader of one outlaw group, known only as "Grandmother," uses old world magic to consolidate power for the Second Empire and hatch a plan to get a hold of a book that reveals the history of the D'Yer wall and the keys to its destruction.

Once Karigan has finished all her errands she discovers the kidnapped Lady Estora in Mirwell. Disguised as the lady she allows the Rider-in-training, Fergal, and Estora to get away. She is captured but escapes with the aid of Lord Amberhill. Karigan discovers the plot of the "Grandmother" through Immerez and travels with Salvistar, the steed of the god Westarion, through the white lands to the castle.

There are intruders in the tombs of Sacor City. Karigan joins a band of Weapons, guards highly committed to guarding the King and the dead royalty, who enter the tombs to stop the intruders. Karigan obtains the book by tricking a couple of soldier intruders, but one releases a ball made by the "Grandmother". The spirits are awakened and demons threaten to become unbound. Karigan rides Salvistar and rights these wrongs.

In the aftermath Karigan is knighted by King Zachary. Rider Mara recovers fully and Alton succeeds in partially healing the wall with the help of the mages. He also overcomes his obsession somewhat and sends a letter to Karigan. Grandmother and the Second Empire journey into the Blackveil hoping to "awake the sleepers".
