Edmund William Gilbert

Edmund William Gilbert (1900–1973) was a British social geographer. He was Professor of Geography at the University of Oxford, from 1953 to 1967 [ [http://www.oua.ox.ac.uk/holdings/Geography%20GE.pdf untitled ] ] .and Fellow of Hertford College, Oxford. He defined geography in terms of the recognition of the characters of regions [Alan R. H. Baker, "Geography and History: Bridging the Divide" (2003), p. 164.] . In the 1920s, while at Reading University, he studied the American West [William Wyckoff, "Understanding Western Places: The Historical Geographers's View", in Gary J. Hausladen (editor), "Western Places, American Myths: How We Think about the West" (2006), p. 22.] . He was much influenced by Halford Mackinder, to the point of being thought an uncritical admirer [By Mark Polelle, "Raising Cartographic Consciousness" (1999), pp. 3-4.] .

During World War II he worked on the Naval Intelligence Handbooks, producing, with Robert Beckinsale [ [http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4158/is_19980829/ai_n14164321 Obituary: Robert Beckinsale | Independent, The (London) | Find Articles at BNET.com ] ] , and S. da Sá, the "Spain and Portugal" volumes.
