St. Catherine's Island, also known as Guale, Santa Catalina, St. Catherine's Island, or as one of the Golden Isles is an island off Georgia located between St. Catherine's Sound and Sapelo Sound. About half of it is salt marshes, about a quarter is wooded, and it has "fine" beaches.

It was the site of the first Spanish outpost in Georgia, and was a Spanish mission center during 1566-1684. Later it was home of Button Gwinnett, a signer of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. Then it became a private game preserve

It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1969.citation|title=PDFlink| [http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NHLS/Text/69000332.pdf National Register of Historic Places Inventory-Nomination: St. Catherine's Island; Guale; Santa Catalina; St. Catherine's Island (One of the Golden Isles)] |32 KB|date=July 9, 1969 |author=John D.
