Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is a heavy-rail public rapid-transit system serving the San Francisco Bay Area. The system is operated by the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District, a special government agency in California consisted of three counties: Alameda County, Contra Costa County, and the City and County of San Francisco. Serving over 350,000 passengers a day, BART is the fifth largest rapid transit systems in the United States in terms of ridership.cite web|url=http://www.bart.gov/docs/station_exits_quarterly.pdf|title=Quarterly Weekday Average Exits|publisher=Bay Area Rapid Transit|accessdate=2008-10-06] [cite web|url=http://www.apta.com/research/stats/ridership/riderep/documents/08q2hr.pdf|title=Heavy Rail Transit Ridership Report |publisher=American Public Transportation Association|accessdate=2008-10-07]

Out of the five lines currently in service, the Richmond–Fremont Line is the oldest, opening in September 1972. The Pittsburg/Bay Point–SFO Line was opened a year later. The Richmond–Millbrae Line and the Fremont–Daly City Line were added to the system in 1980 and 1985 respectively. The system experienced its first major expansion in 1996 and 1997, beginning services to Concord, Colma and Pleasanton, which is currently served by BART's newest line—the Dublin/Pleasanton–Millbrae Line. In mid-2003, extension to San Francisco International Airport and Millbrae was completed, bringing BART further south into the San Mateo County. The system currently has a total of 43 stations: 15 surface, 13 elevated and 15 subway. [cite web|url=http://www.bart.gov/about/history/facts.aspx|title=System Facts|publisher=Bay Area Rapid Transit|accessdate=2008-10-06] The majority of stations are located in the Alameda County with 19. 10 stations are in the Contra Costa County while eight are in the City and County of San Francisco. Six stations are in the San Mateo County, though it is not part of the BART district. Fremont is the southernmost station of the system, while Pittsburg/Bay Point is the northernmost station. In terms of daily ridership, Embarcadero is the most heavily used station, while North Concord/Martinez is the least.
