Sassicaia

Sassicaia

Tenuta San Guido is an Italian winery in the DOC Bolgheri in Toscana, known as a producer of "Super Tuscan" wine. Sassicaia is considered one of Italy's top Bordeaux-style red wines.cite web|last=Atkin |first=Tim, "The Observer" |title= Roll out the Barolo |url= http://lifeandhealth.guardian.co.uk/experts/timatkin/story/0,,1620033,00.html |date= October 1, 2000 ] The estate also produces a second wine, Guidalberto.

History

Tenuta San Guido was established by Mario Incisa della Rochetta, of the Antoniori family, behind one of Italy's most significant negociant firms,winepros.com.au. Since the 1980s the reputation of Sassicaia was eclipsed by Ornellaia, produced by the property adjacent to Tenuta San Guido, suggested to be Lodovico Antinori’s competitive answer to his cousin Nicolò Incisa’s Sassicaia and his older brother Piero Antinori’s wine, Solaia.Cite web|last= Teague |first= Lettie, "Food & Wine" |title= Are Super-Tuscans Still Super? |url= http://www.foodandwine.com/articles/are-super-tuscans-still-super |date= December, 2006 ]

In the late 1990s Sassicaia was granted its own DOC (Bolgheri), the only wine from a single estate in Italy to enjoy this privilege. Before that, and in similarity to other wines made outside the traditional DOC/DOCG regulations, Sassicaia was classified as an Indicazione geografica tipica (IGT). Initially it was a Vino da tavola, which is primarily a category for very simple wines.

Production

Tenuta San Guido cultivates fruit from several plots scattered around Bolgheri extending 75 hectares, with the grape varieties of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc.Cite web|last= Kissack |first= Chris, thewinedoctor.com|title= Tenuta San Guido |url= http://www.thewinedoctor.com/italy/sanguido.shtml ] The second wine Guidalberto was introduced in 2000, and is composed of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 10% Sangiovese.
