John J. Flanagan

John J. Flanagan

Senator John J. Flanagan, John Flanagan was first elected to the New York State Senator in 2002 and is in his sixth year of representing the 2nd Senate District in Suffolk County, New York, which includes the entire Town of Smithtown and portions of both the Town of Brookhaven and the Town of Huntington.

As a legislator, Senator Flanagan has become a well-regarded expert on state budget issues after having served as the ranking member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee while in the Assembly. And his advocacy on behalf of Long Island was instrumental in our region’s school districts receiving record increases in state aid during this year’s budget negotiations. His commitment to the disabled community, school organizations and women’s groups has led to increased state funding and enactment of critical legislation in these areas. He was a proponent of the Safe Schools Against Violence in Education Act (Project SAVE), expanded funding for pre-kindergarten programs and has constantly fought to make college a reality for all Long Islanders.

Flanagan's father, also named John, served in the New York State Assembly from 1972 to 1986.

Senator Flanagan is Chair of the Senate Committee on Corporations, Authorities and Commissions. He also serves on the Senate’s Aging; Consumer Protection; Higher Education; Insurance; Labor; Tourism, Recreation and Sports Development; Transportation; and Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Standing Committees.

In July 2008, Senator Flanagan was appointed by new Senate Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos to be his successor as the lone suburban member the four-member Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Capital Program Review Board. The MTA Capital Program Review Board is responsible for reviewing, monitoring and approving the MTA's multi-billion dollar five-year capital spending programs. Members of the four-member board are appointed by the Senate Majority Leader, Assembly Speaker, the Governor and the Mayor of New York City.
