Papal election, 1216

Papal election, 1216

Papal election of July 18, 1216 – papal election convoked after the death of Pope Innocent III in Perugia (July 16, 1216), elected Cardinal Cencio "Camerario" [The older sources refer him as member of Savelli family but modern scholars reject it [http://www.fiu.edu/~mirandas/bios1193.htm] ] , who took the name of Honorius III

Bourkle-Young: notes to the papal election of 1216 on [http://www.fiu.edu/~mirandas/conclave-xiii.htm#1216 The Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church (by S. Miranda)] ; and K. Eubel, p. 5 n. 2] provide the list of twenty seven cardinals who participated in this election. However, participation of two of them is doubtful because there are strong indications that they actually died before the death of Innocent III. They are included in the table with the question mark.

Absentee cardinals

At least one, and possibly as many as seven cardinals did not attend this election. This ambiguity is due to fact that it is not certain if five of these churchmen had been actually elevated to the cardinalate and the date of death of another one is uncertain and it is not clear if he was still alive in July 1216:

Election of Pope Honorius III

The cardinals assembled in Perugia two days after the death of Innocent III. They deliberated in the enclousure [For this reason, an account on [http://www.vaticanhistory.de/vh/html/honorius_iii_.html Vatican History] considers this election the "first papal conclave"] , though it is not certain whether volunatarily or under pressure of the local authorities [Ambrogio Piazzoni, "Historia wyboru papieży", Wyd. M, Kraków 2003, p. 181-182] . They decided to elect the new Pope by "compromissum", it means, not by the whole Sacred College, but by the committee of few of them, empowered by the rest to appoint the new Pontiff. This time the committee included only two cardinal-bishops: Ugolino of Ostia and Guido of Palestrina [ [http://www.vaticanhistory.de/vh/html/honorius_iii_.html Vatican history] ] . On that same day, they elected Cardinal Cencio, called "Camerario", aged sixty eight, who accepted his election and took the name of Honorius III.
