Wissotzky Tea

Wissotzky Tea

Wissotzky Tea, an Israeli tea company based in Tel Aviv. Main tea distributor in Israel, as well as parts of Europe, North America, and Australia.

History

Wissotzky is an Israeli tea company that originated in mid-19th century Russia. Wissotzky Tea is one of the oldest Russian companies in existence. The company, a leading producer and exporter of tea in Israel, was founded in 1849 by Klonimus Wolf Wissotzky in Moscow, Russia. Wissotzky Tea soon gained tremendous popularity, with devoted customers all over the Russian Empire and in neighboring countries. In 1904 the company extended its activities in Europe and opened a branch in New York to satisfy the demand of its customers who had moved to the United States during the mass immigration from Eastern Europe at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1907 Wissotzky established the Anglo-Asiatic Company as its head office in London, England. To this day that office is active in selecting and purchasing tea from all corners of the globe. In 1917 the company ceased operations in Russia, but opened branches in Poland, Italy and other European countries, in addition to those already existing in Britain and the USA. In 1936 Simon Seidler, a member of the Wissotzky family, set up a plant in Tel Aviv, Israel (then British Mandate Palestine), to supply its products to nearby countries. Eventually headquarters of the company were moved to Tel Aviv. Today, the company is headed by the fifth generation of the Wissotzky family.

Company in Russian folklore

During the Russian Revolution, to promote the false, Anti-Semitic notion that Russia was the victim of Jewish domination, a particular song gained popularity on the streets of Russian cities, with the words,

"“Tea of Wissotzky, Sugar of Brotzky, and Russia of Trotsky”"
