Miles McCrae once owned land in
Southern Sydney , near Hurstville. When he sold that land to a development company, the manager used the name Waitara for the subdivision project. Mcrae later bought land near Hornsby and when the railway sation opened in 1895 he suggested the name Waitara, which was formally adopted. The 2001 census community profile for Waitara revealed roughly equal proportions of men (47%) and women (53%) in a total population of 1700. Two thirds of the population was born in Australia with 82% being Australian citizens. Two thirds of the population is Christian. Nearly half the population (44%) has completed year 12 or its equivalent.
