Unjust is an American alternative rock/metal band from the San Francisco Bay Area.

History

Unjust were formed in 1990 by two thirteen-year-old school friends, Russell Tabayoyon (guitar) and Paul Mendoza (vocals, guitar), in the San Francisco East-Bay Area. Starting at a young age, Unjust collected a good local reputation, but received little credibility outside of their local scene. Russell declined an offer from the Deftones in their earlier days, believing in Unjust's great potential. The band played the local clubs and parties until settling on drummer Brian Palkowski (Nueairea) and bassist Eric Wong (Heathen, Piranha, Laughing Dead).

Thin Line Emotions

Unjust started promoting their last demo at the 1997 Dynamo Open Air Festival in the Netherlands, following through with infiltrating European, South American, and US magazines and fanzines. Incredible reviews followed. Unjust eventually signed with the Dutch label Mascot Records.

Unjust recorded their debut album, "Thin Line Emotions", at the new Sharkbite Studios in Oakland, California, with producer and engineer Mark Keaton. Guest vocalists include Adam Duce from Machine Head, and Steev Esquivel from Skinlab. Mastering responsibilities were handled by Gavin Lurssen (Green Day, Social Distortion, Stevie Ray Vaughn), at Masterlab Studios in Hollywood. "Thin Line Emotions" was released in 1999.

Makeshift Grey

Their sophomore release followed in 2001, entitled "Makeshift Grey". With "Makeshift Grey", Unjust created a dark and gloomy metal atmosphere with songs like 'Come Feel Me' and 'Nylon'. Not only did the band continue to solidify their standing in Europe through Mascot; the album also became an underground hit with Bay Area rock fans and garnered the band interest from major labels in the U.S., as well as landing them a spot at The California Music Awards, and air play on San Francisco's Live 105. It was also during this time that the band began to embark in a new direction, partially brought on with induction of new guitarist/songwriter Mike Merino.
