Leaping gait

Leaping gait

The leaping gaits are a group of related quadruped gaits that include canter, gallop, and stot (also known as pronk and prong).Tristan David Martin Roberts (1995) "Understanding Balance: The Mechanics of Posture and Locomotion", Nelson Thornes, ISBN 0412601605.] These gaits share the characteristic of a leading leg and consequently the possibility of a lead change. There are 9 of these gaits.

Leaping gaits are distinct from running gaits: the latter include trotting (see Terrestrial locomotion).
