Ryan Charles (born 30 September, 1989 in Enfield, Greater London) is an English professional footballer who is currently playing for Luton Town.

Career

A pacy striker who can also operate on either the right or left wing, Charles joined Luton Town as a 9-year-old, turning down archrivals Watford to make the move to Kenilworth Road.

Spotted playing for his local side Hemel Hornets in the final of the Spring Cup, Charles was scouted by Dean Rastrick and he quickly made an impression for the Hatters, earning the top goal scorer honour nearly every season.

His talents weren’t going unnoticed as he earned a call-up to the England Development Camp as an Under-14, where he met the likes of Theo Walcott.

The following year, Charles began to play for the Hatters’ Under-17 side towards the end of the campaign and he became the youngest player to ever score for Luton Town’s youth team when netting with a 20-yard volley in a 2-1 win against Rushden & Diamonds.

The following year Charles was called into the Hatters’ Under-18 side and the Reserve side, where he bagged a highly impressive 4 goals in just 5 matches. As a 15-year-old, he played for the Hatters in the FA Youth Cup, and in an unprecedented move, he was informed of his scholarship before Christmas, a first for the club.

In his first year as an apprentice, he scored 17 goals – earning him the top goal scorer acclaim once again. He was loaned to neighbours Hitchin Town during the 2006–07 campaign, where he netted 3 goals in 10 appearances for the Canaries, including a 25-yard volley against Rugby Town.

He also played for the Hatters’ Youth Team in FA Youth Cup matches against Huddersfield Town and Burnley.

In his second year as a scholar, Charles has been called into the first-team squad, scoring 2 goals for the senior side and 2 goals for the reserve side during the 2006-07 pre-season friendlies.

Charles made his Luton Town debut coming on as a substitute against Southend United in the Football League One on 8 April, 2008. Ryan went on to make 7 League appearances for Luton Town FC during the course of the campaign, operating in attack alongside Sam Parkin. He scored his first goal on his home debut against Oldham Athletic after chesting it down, turning his marker and volleying home. This goal earned him the award of ‘Goal of the Season’ as voted for by Hatters fans.

Rewarded with a professional contract, Ryan was also awarded the ‘Young Player of the Season' trophy and there are high hopes that he can go on to become another in the long list of players who progressed through the Hatters youth academy to go on to big things
