José Horacio Gomez is a Roman Catholic prelate who currently serves as the archbishop of San Antonio in Texas, United States, since his appointment by Pope John Paul II on December 29, 2004.

Early life

Msgr. Gomez was born on December 26, 1951, in Monterrey, Mexico, the son of Dr. José H. Gómez and Esperanza Velasco, both deceased. He has three older sisters and one younger sister. His mother was raised and educated in San Antonio in the 1920s.

Priestly ministry

On August 15, 1978, Msgr. Gomez was ordained to the presbyterate for the Opus Dei Prelature by Franz Konig, archbishop of Vienna, at the Shrine of Torreciudad, Spain. Before being appointed a bishop, Msgr. Gomez worked from 1987 to 1999 at Our Lady of Grace in San Antonio assisting in the pastoral work of the parish. During this time Msgr. Gomez also helped in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston in Katy. In 2003, Msgr. Gomez earned the annual National Association of Hispanic Priests Award, "El Buen Pastor"." Msgr. Gomez played a key role in the establishment of the Hispanic Seminary of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, which opened in August 2000. Founded by Norberto Rivera Carrera, the seminary educates Spanish-speaking seminarians who will later serve in the United States. Msgr. Gomez also spearheaded the establishment of Denver's "Centro San Juan Diego" for Family and Pastoral Care, a place for formation of leaders and a base to provide welcoming services to immigrants. The center has both a pastoral and social services mission. Archbishop Gomez also served as pastor of Denver's Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception from 2001-2003. Prior to his appointment to the metropolitan See of San Antonio, he had been serving as the auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Denver, moderator of the curia, vicar general and pastor of Mother of God Church in Denver. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees at The Catholic University of America.
