Aldine is a census-designated place (CDP) in Harris County, Texas, United States, located within the extraterritorial jurisdiction of Houston. The population was 13,979 at the 2000 census.

The Aldine area is nearby Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport, which is the second largest aviation facility in Texas.

Aldine is also where rapper Mike Jones grew up.

History

Aldine, built on the International–Great Northern Railroad, was named after a local farm family, according to the "Handbook of Texas" Online [http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/AA/hna18.html] .

A post office operated in Aldine from 1896 to 1935; after 1935, mail was delivered from Houston.

In 1914 Aldine included two general stores, a fig preserver, and several poultry breeders and several dairymen.

The population briefly reached 100 in 1925. In the 1930s and 1940s the population decreased to between thirty and forty residents.

The Aldine Independent School District integrated by federal order in 1965.

Aldine, with renewed population growth in the 1970s, had 12,623 residents in 1986, 11,133 residents in 1990 and 13,979 residents in 2000.

Geography

Aldine is located at coor dms|29|55|9|N|95|22|47|W|city (29.919136, -95.379834) GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.1 square miles (21.0 km²)GR|1, all land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 13,979 people, 4,007 households, and 3,193 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,727.0 people per square mile (667.2/km²). There were 4,403 housing units at an average density of 543.9/sq mi (210.1/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 59.30% White, 5.84% African American, 0.69% Native American, 3.41% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 27.58% from other races, and 3.10% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 56.33% of the population.

There were 4,007 households out of which 45.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.9% were married couples living together, 12.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.3% were non-families. 16.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.44 and the average family size was 3.86.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 33.1% under the age of 18, 11.4% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 17.6% from 45 to 64, and 7.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females there were 107.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 106.4 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $32,437, and the median income for a family was $35,518. Males had a median income of $28,779 versus $19,936 for females. The per capita income of the CDP was $11,701. About 17.0% of families and 18.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.3% of those under age 18 and 19.3% of those age 65 or over.

The Aldine Community Storefront Station is located at 10966 North Freeway (Interstate 45).
