South Carolina primary, 2004

Senator John Edwards carried the state, his home state and also his first victory. He beat John Kerry by a vote of 45% to 29%. Al Sharpton got a surprising third place finish over Wesley Clark. African Americans voted for Edward over Kerry 37% to 34% to Sharpton 17%. In low income Americans under 15,000 Edwards bested Kerry too 46% to 34% to Sharpton 7%. In Americans 15-30,000 dollars Edwards won to 42% to 33% Sharpton 11%. Young voters were also a factor in the election going yet again to Edwards 34% to Kerry 27% Clark at 15% and Dean at 13%. In polling 2 days before the primary had Edwards leading John Kerry 36% to 32%. His large margin of victory can be attributed to people who decided the day of the primary going to Edwards 41% to 30% and winning veteran votes 48% to 29%.
