Pierre Duval (stage name) was born Ovide Coutu, in
Montréal ,Québec , where he took voice lessons with Frank Rowe. He then studied at the Montreal Music Conservatory with Dina Maria Narici. On a scholarship he went to Italy to complete his studies with Alberto Volonnino in Rome, where he made his debut at theTeatro dell'Opera di Roma inStravinsky 's "Le Rossignol ", in 1962.Back in America, her performed with the "Théâtre de Nouvell-France", the
Canadian Opera Company , theVancouver Opera , in the standard French and Italian repertories. He also performed as soloist with several North American orchestras. He took part in a number of CBC opera telecasts, notably as Macduff in "Macbeth", in 1973, oppositeLouis Quilico andMarisa Galvany .Pierre Duval's name became widely known through his recording of the role of Arturo in
Bellini 's "I puritani ", oppositeJoan Sutherland , in 1963, as a last minute substitute forFranco Corelli .ources
